This tapestry, commissioned by the Queensland Art Gallery with funds from Tim Fairfax, AM, and Gina Fairfax through the Queensland Art Gallery Foundation, showcases the excellence and innovation of the Australian Tapestry Workshop.
Yvonne Todd, a New Zealand photographic artist, was chosen as the designing artist pointing to the diversity of practice found in contemporary Pacific art. In 2002, Todd won the prestigious Wallace Art Award (New Zealand), helping to establish her as an important 'young gun' on the New Zealand art landscape. The Queensland Art Gallery has a number of Todd’s work is in its collection.
Interpreting a photographic work presents a number of technical challenges for the weavers. The realisation of the transparency in the gown sleeves, the development of refined skin tones and the sensitive rendering of the facial features and mass of hair give Alice Bayke an extraordinary presence. A subtle palette of yarns was selected to create complex mixes with which to achieve the quality of light and tone present in the photograph - with many delicate colours especially dyed in cotton for the project. |
